There are many myths around relationship violence such as that the victims behavior is to blame or that violence is caused by substance abuse, stress and poverty. Other common excuses for violence given:

That is not abuse

That is not violence

I was just joking

I had a bad day

I’m tired

I’m stressed

You push my buttons

You made me jealous

It’s your fault – it is what you do to me

I just snapped

I had a bad childhood

It won’t happen again

I’m sorry

You deserved it

I was drunk

I should be more important than your friends/family

I didn’t mean to hurt you

I love you too much
