What is primary prevention?

Primary prevention aims to prevent violence before it happens. It is proactive care and education.

We applaud the work of the National Network of Women’s Refuge, Shine and all the regional and community organisations supporting New Zealand women and children who have become victims of abuse.

Most Government funding is dedicated to supporting women after violence has taken place. This work is critical and we will not compete against these organisations for funding.

We aim to complement their wonderful work and ultimately reduce the need for their services.

We believe the key is recognising the signs, before violence occurs. Many young women are taken completely by surprise the first time their partner is violent towards them. Yet almost always, there are warning signs. It’s just that young women (and often their friends and families) are not well trained to see them. Abusive behaviours almost always follow a pattern and escalate.

The Sophie Elliott Foundation plans to educate young women to see the signs, and empower them to take positive steps to stay safe.
